Residents of any community have the right to inquire and should be concerned about the kinds of businesses entering their area. Recently, a community met with pawnbrokers interested in opening shop in their neighborhood. Members of the community were concerned about stolen property being sold. The pawnbrokers made a presentation, covering a host of topics from firearms to cash advance : “Representatives from a nationwide chain of pawn shops met with a homeowners group Monday to discuss opening a store nearby. [[ads]] Before filing for the zoning change and special-use permit needed to move forward, CashAmerica had to meet with the Cathedral Area Preservation Association about their proposed location in the Kirby Plaza, 918 W. Jefferson St. The company’s Operations Director Bud Anderson and Special Projects Manager Paul Rosenfeld and local attorney Mike Hansen also recently met with the St. Pat’s Neighborhood Association and the Joliet Police Department. About 25 people attended the presentation at First Presbyterian Church, which Anderson began by explaining the publicly traded company provides loans on collateral, mostly jewelry. People usually have 30 or 45 days to pay back the money and interest, or the store can sell the item used as collateral. Rosenfeld said many people worry pawn shops are used to sell stolen property” (http://www.suburbanchicagonews.com/heraldnews/business/2633716,4_1_JO25_PAWNSHOP_S1-100825.article).
